Common hedges in Droitwich & the WR9 area

Different hedge species need different approaches. Here's a guide to the most common hedges we cut across Droitwich Spa and the surrounding villages, and what to bear in mind for each.

Leylandii & Conifers

The most common tall hedge in Droitwich. Leylandii grows fast — up to 90cm per year — and can quickly become a problem if not cut regularly. It must never be cut back into old brown wood, as it won't re-shoot. We recommend cutting twice a year to keep it in check and always leave green growth on all sides.

Privet

Semi-evergreen and fast-growing, privet is common in Droitwich's residential streets. It responds well to hard cutting and can be shaped formally or kept as a loose informal hedge. Best cut 2–3 times a year during the growing season for a tidy result.

Laurel

Cherry laurel is widely used as a privacy screen across the Droitwich area. It has large, glossy leaves and grows vigorously. We use secateurs alongside hedge trimmers on laurel to avoid shredded leaves — which look untidy and create entry points for disease. Best cut once or twice a year in spring and late summer.

Hawthorn

A tough, traditional boundary hedge very common in the rural villages around Droitwich — Hanbury, Ombersley and Upton Warren in particular. Hawthorn is wildlife-friendly and provides nesting habitat, so we always check for birds before cutting. Best cut once a year in late summer after nesting season.

Beech

Beech is popular in formal gardens and holds its russet brown leaves through winter. It should be cut once a year in late August. Cutting in late summer encourages the hedge to hold its dead leaves through winter, providing structure and some privacy even when bare.

Box

Box is used for formal topiary, low edging and knot gardens. It's slow-growing and fine-textured, taking to precise shaping very well. We cut box carefully with sharp tools to maintain clean edges. Box blight has become more common in Worcestershire in recent years — we can advise if we see early signs.

Common Questions

Hedge cutting FAQ

Under the Wildlife and Countryside Act 1981, it is an offence to intentionally damage or destroy an active bird's nest. The main nesting season runs from 1 March to 31 August, and our best practice is to avoid cutting during this period. That said, cutting is not automatically illegal during nesting season — the offence requires intent. If we check first and find no active nests, work can go ahead legally at any time of year. The safest window is September to February, and for most hedges a cut in early autumn and again in late winter gives the best results. We always inspect for nesting activity before we start.
Yes — all cuttings and green waste are removed and disposed of responsibly after every visit. We leave your garden completely clean.
Yes. We cut all types including conifers, leylandii, privet, hawthorn, laurel and beech. For very tall or overgrown hedges we carry out reduction work to bring them to a manageable height.
Most garden hedges look their best when cut twice a year — typically May/June and August/September. Fast-growing hedges like leylandii may need a third cut. We offer one-off and regular maintenance schedules.
Hedge cutting in Droitwich typically starts from around £40 for a small garden hedge. Medium hedges are usually £60–90 and larger or taller hedges are quoted individually. All quotes are free — just send us a photo via WhatsApp for a quick estimate.
Legally, you are entitled to cut back any branches or growth that overhangs your property, up to the boundary line. The cuttings technically belong to your neighbour and should be offered back to them. We can cut both sides of a boundary hedge if access is available and both parties are in agreement — we just need access to both gardens.
Leylandii can be reduced in height but must never be cut back into old brown wood — unlike most hedges, leylandii will not re-shoot from bare wood. We reduce leylandii in stages where needed, always leaving green growth to maintain the hedge. A good rule of thumb is to never remove more than one third of the height in a single cut.
The Anti-social Behaviour Act 2003 (Part 8) gives local councils the power to intervene in disputes about high hedges — specifically evergreen or semi-evergreen hedges over 2 metres that are blocking light or access. In the Droitwich area, complaints are made to Wychavon District Council after attempting to resolve the matter directly with your neighbour. We can carry out reduction work once an agreement has been reached.
